These terms (“Terms”) govern your download and use of the werk desktop application, its bundled vsp engine, and the optional account features operated by the werk project (together, “werk” or “the Software”). By installing or using the Software you accept these Terms on behalf of yourself or the organization you represent. If you do not accept them, do not install or use the Software.
1. Independent tool — no affiliation with SAP SE
werk is developed by independent authors. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or connected in any way with SAP SE or any of its affiliates or subsidiaries. “SAP”, “SAP S/4HANA”, “ABAP”, “SAP Fiori”, “BTP” and other SAP product names mentioned in the app or on this website are trademarks or registered trademarks of SAP SE, and are used solely to describe that werk interoperates with SAP systems (nominative fair use). Nothing in these Terms or in the Software creates any support, partnership, or agency relationship with SAP SE.
2. Your SAP license is your responsibility
werk connects to SAP systems using your own credentials, over standard interfaces exposed by the systems you are already licensed to use. It does not bypass, break, or circumvent any technical protection measure, license check, or access control of SAP or any other vendor.
Nevertheless, your right to connect tooling to an SAP system — including automated or bulk reading of metadata, source code, and customizing, and any writing or transport of changes — is governed by your SAP license agreements, customer contracts, developer terms, and any API usage policies that apply to your systems. Some such agreements restrict third-party tooling, automated extraction, or development against certain system types. It is solely your responsibility to verify that your use of werk complies with every agreement that governs your SAP landscape, and to obtain any approval your organization or SAP requires. The werk authors are not a party to those agreements and accept no responsibility for your compliance with them.
3. The Software is provided “AS IS”
The Software is distributed under the MIT License (see the LICENSE file and the Third-Party Notices). To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Software is provided “AS IS”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including without limitation the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. The entire risk as to the quality, accuracy, and performance of the Software is with you.
Without limiting the foregoing, werk incorporates and interacts with artificial-intelligence / large-language-model services that you configure. AI output is fallible: it can be incomplete, outdated, subtly wrong, or entirely fabricated (“hallucinated”). Documentation, analyses, code suggestions, fixes, and scripts produced through werk must be treated as unverified drafts until a qualified human has reviewed them.
4. Assumption of risk and your responsibilities
You use werk entirely at your own risk, and you are responsible for the outcomes. In particular:
- System changes. Certain features (for example the develop → fix → debug → test → heal loop) can propose, and with your approval apply, changes to SAP systems and transport them between systems. Despite built-in safeguards, such changes can break code, corrupt configuration, or cause production outages and data loss. Only direct such features at systems you are authorized to change, test in non-production first, keep backups and rollback paths, and review every change before activation.
- Generated content. Documentation, digital-twin facts, agent suggestions, and generated code reflect the systems and models they were built from and may contain errors. Validate before relying on them for business, audit, or compliance decisions.
- Locally executed scripts. werk can generate and run helper scripts (for example Python analysis scripts) on your machine to summarize large results. These run with your user permissions under a limited allow-list sandbox, not an operating-system sandbox. Review scripts before running them; treat content fetched from any system or document as untrusted input that may attempt prompt injection.
- Credentials and secrets. You supply and control all SAP credentials, session cookies, and AI provider API keys. You are responsible for storing them securely, for who can access your machine and workspace, and for any key rotation after an incident.
- Data flows to services you choose. When you use a hosted AI provider or web-search provider, the prompts — which may include SAP source code, configuration, and other content from your landscape — are sent to that provider under your account and are governed by that provider’s terms and privacy policy. Choosing a fully local model keeps processing on your machine. Reviewing and restricting these flows is your responsibility.
- Authorization. You may only connect werk to systems and data you are authorized to access, in line with your organization’s policies and applicable law.
5. Privacy
werk is local-first: by default, your SAP metadata, indexes, documentation, settings, and credentials stay on your machine, and the default build contains no telemetry. The full Privacy Policy explains exactly what can leave your machine, when, and why.
6. Third-party components
The Software incorporates third-party open-source components, each licensed under its own terms (MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD, and similar). These Terms apply only to the werk authors’ own contributions; third-party components remain subject to their licenses, reproduced in the Third-Party Notices and in the source repository. The trademarks and names of third parties remain their owners’ property, and their appearance does not imply endorsement of werk.
7. Optional account and paid features
Some distributions enable optional account features (sign-in, subscription tiers, cloud-synced settings). Where enabled: billing is processed by our payment provider (Stripe) under its terms; we store only what is described in the Privacy Policy; usage limits and feature availability may change; and paid features may be modified or discontinued, in which case any refunds required by law will be honored. Optional cloud features are exactly that — the core product works without any account.
8. Updates
The app may periodically check our GitHub releases for signed software updates and offer them for installation. You can decline updates; core functionality does not depend on them.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the werk authors and contributors shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, revenue, goodwill, or business interruption, arising out of or relating to your use of (or inability to use) the Software — including damage to SAP systems or connected systems, security incidents, and consequences of acting on AI-generated output. Where liability cannot be excluded or limited by law, it is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for the Software in the twelve months before the claim (which for the free distribution is zero) and the minimum amount required by applicable law. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for intent or gross negligence where such limitation is prohibited.
10. Indemnification
You will defend and indemnify the werk authors and contributors against claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Software in violation of these Terms, of applicable law, or of the rights of any third party — including SAP SE or your employers’ and customers’ agreements.
11. No professional advice or support obligation
Nothing in the Software is legal, compliance, security, accounting, or other professional advice, and using werk does not create a support or consulting relationship. The Software is a self-service tool provided without any obligation of support, maintenance, or error correction.
12. Export control and applicable law
You agree to comply with all export control, sanctions, and anti-boycott laws that apply to your download and use of the Software. These Terms are governed by the laws of the principal place of business of the copyright holders, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where mandatory consumer-protection law of your country of residence provides otherwise.
13. Changes to these Terms
The werk authors may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes are surfaced in the app, and the effective date at the top of this document is bumped. Continuing to use the Software after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
14. Severability, and contact
If any provision of these Terms is held unenforceable, it will be modified to the minimum extent necessary or severed, and the remaining provisions stay in force. Questions and legal notices: [email protected].
